I won’t go into details about why anti-virus software is essential on any platform. I assume you are already knowledgeable and thus are looking for solutions. As an active Linux user my recommendations are below.

1. Sophos Anti-Virus

Sophos includes a virus, trojan and malware scanner. There is on demand and real-time scanning. Sophos not only detects Linux baddies but also prevents and removes Windows, Android and MacOS malware too. This Anti-Virus gets high marks for high performance, lightweight footprint, wide platform compatibility and it’s FREE!

2. ClamAV

ClamAV has been around a long time in the Linux world and it is a great alternative to the number one pick above. ClamAV is easy to install, open source and most importantly FREE! If you are using Ubuntu, the program is available via the main repository. Installation is as simple as:

sudo apt -install clamav

Please note that ClamAV does not include a GUI. If you would like to have a GUI, an additional installation of ClamTK is required.
